Project Information
Steelwork Questions, Answered.
What to prepare, what to check and what to ask before you order commercial steelwork.
What Do You Need To Quote For Steel Fabrication?
A steel fabrication quote starts with the intended use, drawings or dimensions, material, quantity and finish. Include your site postcode and target date, and say whether delivery or installation is needed. If calculations, site measurements or connection details are still outstanding, identify them so they can be allowed for in the scope.
Do You Cover Commercial Sites Outside Hull?
Commercial steelwork enquiries are welcome from Hull and nearby East Yorkshire towns including Hessle, Beverley, Cottingham, Hedon and Brough. Describe the project location and access arrangements when you enquire. Travel, delivery and installation requirements are assessed against the actual package, so coverage does not imply that every type of work is available at every site.
How Is A Hull Steelwork Quote Priced?
Steel fabrication cost depends on material, weight, detail, workshop time, finish and inspection requirements. For a Hull steelwork package, haulage, crane access and erection arrangements can account for a substantial share of the quote. A defined drawing package makes quotes easier to compare. Ask what is included and identify any assumptions before deciding whether two prices cover the same work.
Do I Need Approved Drawings Before Enquiring?
Approved drawings are not needed for an initial fabrication enquiry, but they are needed before manufacture can be released where the design requires them. Send the information you have and identify anything provisional. A quote should distinguish fabrication from surveying, engineering and drawing development so no design responsibility is left unclear.
When Is Steelwork Structural Rather Than General Fabrication?
Structural steelwork contributes to the stability or load-bearing performance of a structure. General fabricated items may serve other purposes, such as covers or non-structural fittings. Classification follows intended use, rather than size alone. An engineer or competent designer should clarify the role and applicable specification where the distinction is uncertain.
Does Every Fabrication Need BS EN 1090 Documentation?
BS EN 1090 documentation depends on the component’s intended structural use and whether it falls within the relevant scope. It should not be assumed to apply identically to all metal products. For structural packages, confirm the execution class, product marking route and evidence required with the designer and supplying fabricator.
Can You Quote For A One-Off Component?
A one-off component can be assessed from a defined application, dimensions and material specification. Include photographs or a sample description if the part interfaces with existing equipment. A one-off still needs appropriate design and inspection, and setup time can be significant compared with a repeat production batch of the same item.
Which Steel Finish Should I Specify?
The steel finish should suit exposure, cleaning, corrosion risk and appearance requirements. State whether the item is internal, external or near moisture or chemicals. Surface preparation and coating details matter as much as colour. Fire protection is a separate design requirement and should not be confused with an ordinary paint system.
How Long Will Fabrication Take?
Fabrication lead time depends on drawing approval, material availability, workshop capacity, complexity and finishing. Inspection or trial assembly can also affect the sequence. Give your target date and any fixed shutdown or site restrictions when enquiring. A realistic programme can be agreed once the scope and outstanding decisions are understood.
Can Existing Steelwork Be Altered?
Existing steelwork can sometimes be altered after its material, condition and structural role have been checked. Do not remove a member, enlarge a hole or add a load without an appropriate assessment. For load-bearing alterations, an engineer should establish the design and any temporary support required before fabrication or site work begins.
What Should Be Included In A Fabrication Quote?
A fabrication quote should identify materials, quantities, drawings, finish, inspection, delivery and installation responsibilities. It should also state assumptions, exclusions and the approval stage needed before production. Check whether bolts, design input, lifting, site measurement and coatings are included, especially when comparing prices from packages with different boundaries.
Will My Enquiry Be Shared With A Local Firm?
Your enquiry may be shared with a suitable local firm so it can discuss your steelwork project. The form asks for your agreement before you send it. Share only information needed to explain the work, and avoid confidential files at this stage. Our privacy notice explains the handling of enquiry details.
